* Communicating with the [[Mason]]s is a key part of Spy play in a game involving Masons. The Masons can reveal themselves to the Spy at night and have the Spy send a PM to the Masons the following day (or if PMs are disabled the Masons can have a Spy say something obnoxious in chat such as slipping the word "fruit" in one of their global messages). * With regards to dealing with Mafia chat, it is often difficult to make concise judgements outside of simply knowing their roles or strategies. Often Mafia may deliberately mention a fellow Mafia player by name in order to deceive the Spy or lead them to lynching an innocent the following day. If the Spy is preplaced, it is unlikely you can draw any credible information from the Mafia chat as they know you are listening. If the Spy comes from a Random role, the likelihood that the Mafia is speaking genuinely is higher, but not assured. Overview

The Spy is one of the less powerful Town roles but has the potential to reveal a lot of information about the Mafia as well as prevent them from using more advanced strategies whilst the Spy is still in play. The role has the ability to view anonymous Mafia chat as well as anonymous Mason chat and Private Messages and has the ability to see the Mafia's target depending on the settings.

Strategies

  • Having a Spy in the game makes it difficult for the Mafia to utilize any strategy that requires a lot of communication amongst themselves. If the Mafia communicates unaware that there is a Spy, they may reveal critical information about their roles, actions or identities.
  • The Spy can also deduce who is not in the Mafia if the setting "Can see all Mafia targets is enabled". Be wary if there is a Janitor or Witch, as the Janitor can target fellow Mafia, and the Witch can make a Mafia member target a fellow Mafia. However, other Mafia roles must target non-Mafia players, which enables the Spy to play an investigative role in allowing you to deduce who is not the Mafia by who the Mafia is targeting.
  • With the ability to listen to PMs enabled, the Spy can prove his Town-alignment by being tested on his ability to hear private conversations. This also allows the Town to establish a communication network during the day, with the Mafia unaware of what the Town is discussing. The Spy is able to weed out misinformation and coordinate information, meaning the Spy can be substantially powerful depending on the player.
  • With regards to dealing with Mafia chat, it is often difficult to draw conclusions based on what you hear as to who the Mafia is. If the Spy is preplaced, it is unlikely you can draw any credible information from the Mafia chat as they know you are listening. However, they may deliberately drop their real names since they think you won't believe them. If the Spy comes from a Random role, the likelihood that the Mafia is speaking genuinely is higher, but not assured. A Mafia member may be taking precautions by feeding misinformation even when he isn't sure if a Spy is in the game. Consequently, a Mafia member may sometimes accidentally drop genuine identifying information. The mind games can be endless.
  • Mafia may also drop other clues unintentionally. For example, if during the day there is only one player that utilizes proper spelling and grammar, and in the Mafia chat there also happens to be a player using proper spelling and grammar, then there is a strong possibility that the player with proper spelling and grammar is a member of the Mafia. However, some Mafia may deliberately capitalize on this by typing differently between day and night. Remember that they may have read this page as well!
