The spy's only ability is that he can hear what the mafia are saying during night chat, he can't see who's saying what so the mafia can use this to their advantage and manipulate the spy.
Strategies
While listening in at night go ahead and right in your last will weather you found out if the mafia have certain roles. Listen for "block X" or "frame y", but always remember that the mafia will almost always assume there is a spy reading their chat and will act accordingly.
If the mafia chooses not to talk at night then the Spy can take the role of a doctor to prevent another doctor from dying that night. Using the PM system you can message a known investigator and let him know your plan. Just be careful not to message the Consigliere pretending to be the investigator with that message.
